Diamond Types and Manufacturing Processes

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds form under intense pressure and high heat far beneath the Earth's crust. They are pushed to the surface by volcanic eruptions before mining even begins.

The unique process of natural diamond formation has a long tradition and fascinates people. This process is geographically limited and mainly occurs beneath continental plates.

Lab-Grown Diamonds (HDHP and CVD)

The production of synthetic diamonds is done through two main methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

In the HPHT process, a small diamond seed is placed in a growth cell and treated with carbon and metallic liquid. Under extreme conditions, a diamond forms that is similar to natural diamonds.

The CVD process replicates diamond formation in interstellar gas clouds. Thin diamond wafers are placed in a growth cell, and hydrocarbon gas forms a diamond under pressure and heat.
